Hip Resurfacing

Mr Neuhaus, our consultant orthopaedic surgeon, is currently the second surgeon offering this procedure in Spain (the other one is in Barcelona!). The procedure of hip resurfacing, also known as Birmingham hip, buys time (estimated 8 to 10 years) for the younger person (usually under the age of 60) before they finally have a total hip joint replacement. Instead of actually removing the hip joint, this procedure involves resurfacing the ball and the socket of the hip joint so that there are two new surfaces in use in the joint.

The hospital stay is usually between 3 to 5 days and the patient starts walking on the new hip immediately! Rehabilitation is often straightforward and most people return to normal physical activities in a very short of time.

If the waiting list is too long for you at home and you would like to come to the Costa del Sol to have the hip resurfacing done, we can arrange everything for you. This would include pick-up from the airport to take you to the hospital, pre-operative consultation, the operation itself including the prosthesis, hospital stay and physiotherapy, and then an apartment or hotel after leaving hospital while you continue your physiotherapy and prepare yourself to get back home. Return to your home country depends on your recovery, but is on average between 2 to 4 weeks!
